Description: This webinar explores the types of chronic trauma, the prevalence of complex trauma, and diagnostic issues related to complex trauma. The effects of complex trauma exposure in youth will be explained along with the long-term consequences of childhood exposure to complex trauma. Eight domains of complex trauma will be discussed in depth: affect regulation, behavioral control, physical health, cognition, dissociation, self-concept, attachment, and future orientation.

- Define complex trauma, identifying key distinctions and diagnostic challenges.
- Analyze the prevalence of complex trauma and explore diagnostic considerations, including limitations in existing frameworks.
- Explain the effects of complex trauma exposure on youth, both in the short term and as long-term consequences into adulthood.
- Discuss how childhood exposure to complex trauma influences developmental, emotional, and relational trajectories across a lifespan.
Dr. Angel Knoverek is the Director of Counselor Education at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, MO. She serves as president of the Missouri Counseling Association and co-chair of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network’s Complex Trauma/Developmental Trauma Disorder Work Group. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Missouri and Illinois and is an Approved Clinical Supervisor. She has co-authored multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Knoverek is an endorsed trainer in Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress (SPARCS) and Psychological First Aid (PFA) and is also a Problem-Based Learning Facilitator for the NCTSN Core Curriculum on Childhood Trauma (CCCT). She owns and operates Mindshift Center in Quincy, Illinois.
