Continuing Education Requirements:

Those who have new licenses (issued prior to July 1 of an even year) the requirements are 10 hours of formal and 10 hours of self-study for the first renewal cycle. 

To be eligible for licensure renewal, each LPC MUST complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years prior to the expiration date. Topics must be relevant to professional counseling. 50 minutes equals one clock hour of continuing education.

Hours may be a combination of formal and Informal Hours.

A minimum of 20 Formal hours are required

   

     Self Study Hours (Informal) Are:

Professional material includes relevant books, journals, periodicals, tapes, and other materials and preparation for relevant lectures and talks to public groups. May not be more than 20 hours of total.

Minimum of 20 total formal hours

(all 40 hours of CE’s may be formal hours)

2 Hours of Formal Suicide assessment, referral, treatment and management training

Post graduate coursework offered by a regionally accredited education institution

  • that was not graduate coursework required for licensure. 
  • Credit: One (1) semester hour of graduate credit = fifteen (15) hours of CE. 

Attend relevant  international, national, regional, state, or local professional meetings (attendance must be verified). verification of attendance. 

  • Credit: Three (3) hours for a full day of meeting attendance.

Attend workshops, seminars, or CE courses in person or on-line. Must have certificate.

Written contributions to relevant professional books, journals, or periodicals IF:  

  • Three (3) CE hours for publication in a non-referee journal
  • Six (6) CE hours for publication in a referee journal
  • Eight (8) CE hours for each chapter in a book
  • Ten (10) CE hours for editing a book
  • Fifteen (15) CE hours for the publication of a book. 

Teaching that relates to the following core areas; Counseling Theory, Human Growth & Development, Social & Cultural Diversity, Helping Relationship, Group Counseling, Career Development, Appraisal, Research Methods, Diagnosis, or Professional Orientation. 

  • Present at a relevant professional meeting (i.e., international, national, regional, state, or local professional associations).  
    • Maximum credit of three (3) hours per presentation. 
  • Faculty member at an accredited education institution who teaches a minimum of four (4) clock hours.  
    • Maximum credit of twenty (20) hours per year. 
  • Teaching formal CE courses a minimum of four (4) clock hours.  
    • Maximum credit of four (4) hours per biennial cycle.

The following does not count toward CE’s

Preparation for presentations for meetings or teaching courses, that are used for CE’s.

Personal counseling.

Psychotherapy, workshops on personal growth.

Supervision of individuals for licensure.

Services provided to professional associations or organizations.
