The Application Process:

Counselor-in-Training (PLPC)

Degree required: A graduate degree of 48 semester hours (or equivalent) or more in one of the following areas: Counseling, Guidance and Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and/or School Psychology.

Official transcripts are sent either electronically or in a sealed school addressed envelope (a copy is not acceptable) sent directly to the Missouri Committee for Professional Counselors.

Secure a site and qualified site supervisor.

Pass the National Counselor Examination (NCE) https://www.nbcc.org/exams/nce 

Applicants must request NBCC send the Committee the results.

Applicants can apply for a Counselor-in-training (CIT), and once approved, can accumulate supervision hours until the NCE is passed.

Complete and pay for a background check.

Fee of $75 (check, money order or cashiers check) 

Send completed application, checklist, supporting documents, and fees to the Committee for Professional Counselors

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

Complete a minimum total of 3000 hours (minimum of 1200 of those hours are direct client) AND 24 months of counseling directly under a Missouri Approved Supervisor or approved hours from another state.

Supervisor completes the “Verification for Post Degree Supervision” form.

Completed 2 hours of suicide prevention training.

Complete and pass the Jurisprudence exam at https://mynbce.org/missouriprofessional-counselors-jurisprudence-exam/

Complete Background Check/Fingerprinting if it has been more than 2 years.

Pay a $100 fee and sign the check or money order or cashier’s check addressed to: Missouri Committee for Professional Counselors.
