This training is designed for professionals who want to enhance their skills in identifying and managing suicide risk. The critical processes of suicide assessment, appropriate referral techniques, effective interventions, and management strategies. Attendees will be equipped with practical insights and immediate strategies that can be integrated into practice in various counseling settings.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the behavioral, psychological, and situational indicators associated with suicidal ideation and attempts, enabling early intervention in diverse settings.
  • Use evidence-based assessment tools and clinical interviewing techniques to accurately evaluate suicide risk.
  •  Understand the framework of referral systems and be adept at connecting individuals to appropriate resources during crises.
  • Discuss treatment interventions that are tailored to reducing self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
The Presenter: 

Dr. Gregory Elliott is an Associate Professor at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, CO. He is the 2024-2025 Past-Chair of the American Counseling Association Western Region. He is also on the legislative committee and is a past president of the Colorado Counseling Association, one of the largest state branches of the American Counseling Association. Dr. Elliott has been a licensed professional counselor since 2004 and he is an LPC in the state of Colorado and a LMHC in the state of Iowa. His clinical specialization is in working with suicidal clients and he maintains a clinical supervision private practice for counselors working to obtain their post-graduate supervised hours for licensure. Dr. Elliot's expertise in working with suicidal clients has been informed by his own original research on the content and pedagogy of how counselor education programs prepare students to work with suicidal clients. He is a former AMSR trainer, a former ASIST trainer, and he and a colleague offer a full-day training on Working with Suicidal Clients for clinicians and students. He has over 50 presentations and publications, many on topics related to clinical supervision, online education, and suicide prevention, intervention, and treatment.
